This page explains how Mattress Obsessions researches products and decides what to include in our buying guides. We want you to know exactly what our recommendations are based on, and what they are not based on.
Who we are
Mattress Obsessions is a small, independent website about mattresses, bedding and other sleep products. We research products and write buying guides to help you compare your options.
We do not test products hands-on. We do not visit stores, and we do not use third-party testers or labs. Our guides are based on research: we gather published information from manufacturers, certification bodies, safety regulators and health authorities, compare it, and explain it in plain language.
How we research products
For each guide, we look at the following:
- Manufacturer specifications. Materials, dimensions, construction, firmness descriptions and care instructions, taken from the manufacturer or the retailer listing. When a detail comes only from the manufacturer, we say so (for example, “the manufacturer says…”).
- Certifications. Where possible, we check certifications in the certifier’s own database or on its website, for example GREENGUARD Gold (UL Solutions), CertiPUR-US, GOTS and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. We also explain what each label covers, because each one certifies something specific and none of them is a general safety rating.
- Safety rules and recalls. For products covered by federal safety standards, such as crib mattresses, we check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) rules and its recall database.
- Health and safety guidance. For topics such as infant sleep, we follow guidance from authorities like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- Owner feedback. We read public reviews from buyers to spot common patterns, such as recurring complaints about size, smell, durability or customer service. We use this as background, not as proof.
- Price and terms. We compare price for each size, warranty length, and trial or return terms, because these often matter as much as the product itself.
How we choose products
We compare products on criteria that fit the category, such as:
- materials and construction
- certifications, and what they actually cover
- fit and size rules (for example, the federal size and fit requirements for crib mattresses)
- firmness, especially for infant products, where a firm, flat surface is required for safe sleep
- warranty and trial or return terms
- price for each size
- whether the product is currently available to buy
We do not give products numeric scores, star ratings or percentages. Instead, we use short “Best for” notes to explain who a product may suit and what its trade-offs are. A product’s position in a list is not a score.
We leave out products that do not meet the relevant safety rules, that are under an active recall, or that we cannot find reliable information about.
Health and safety content
When an article includes health or safety information, we check each claim against authoritative sources, such as federal regulators, government health agencies and professional medical organizations. We cite those sources with numbered links and list them at the end of the article, so you can read the original guidance yourself.
Our content is for general information only and is not medical advice. Please talk to your doctor or your child’s pediatrician about questions related to your health or your baby’s sleep.
Updates and corrections
Products, prices and guidance change. We update articles when a product is discontinued or recalled, when prices or terms change significantly, or when official guidance is revised.
Each article keeps its original published date. The “Last updated” date changes only when we make a real change to the content.
If you spot an error or out-of-date information, please tell us through our Contact page. We review every report and correct mistakes.
How we make money
Some links on this site are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. We may also earn a commission from other retailers. This does not change the price you pay.
Affiliate commissions never affect which products we include or how we describe them. We do not accept payment from brands to be included in our guides.
