How do electric heated blankets work?

Electric throw blankets have insulated wires or heating elements built into the fabric, like a regular heating pad. Once plugged in, the electric current passes through these wires and makes heat. Electric blankets have a controller with heat settings. Located between the plug and the blanket, this unit controls how much electricity passes through the wires so that you get the temperature you want. Most newer models also have an auto shut-off timer. Some modern heated throw blankets use thin, flexible wires, so they feel almost like a regular blanket.

Safety Rules While Using Electric Throw Blanket

An electric heated blanket can cause burns or fires if not used correctly. Before you plug in and snuggle up, read the instruction manual carefully, and follow these safety practices.^[1]

• Do not use it for anyone who cannot operate the heat controls—infants, young children, or people who can’t feel heat well or can’t move away from it.
• Do not use the electric blanket on a waterbed, sofa bed, adjustable bed, or wheelchair unless the maker says it’s safe – the frame can pinch the wires.
• Keep it flat while using it. Folds and bunched-up areas trap too much heat. Don’t tuck it in.
• Don’t sit or put heavy things on the blanket, and never cover the controller.
• Don’t leave it on unattended or while you sleep. Warm the bed first, then switch it off or use a short auto shut-off timer.
• Plug it straight into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and don’t use it at the same time as a heated mattress pad.
• Don’t let pets claw or chew the blanket. Torn fabric can expose the wiring and increase the risk of shock and fire.
• Never iron your heated blanket, as this can damage the wiring.
• Check the blanket, cord and controller before each season. Replace it if you see charred, dark or frayed spots, or if it’s about 10 years old.

Electric heated blankets come in all shapes and sizes. Here are some important factors to consider before buying a heated throw blanket online or from a store.

• Safety: First and foremost consideration is safety. Look for blankets certified by a nationally recognized testing lab such as UL or ETL.^[1]
• Heat settings: Most models have several heat settings. Many also have a preheat mode and an auto shut-off timer.
• Material: Many heated blankets use polyester fleece, plush or sherpa for softness and warmth. Polyester is not fire-resistant, so the safety rules above still apply.
• Wash care: Check the wash label for cleaning instructions. Many can be machine washed and tumble dried on low once you unplug the controller.
• Size: Choose from throw, twin, full, queen, and king sizes. Queen and larger sizes often have two controllers.
• Low-voltage options: Some electric blankets run on low voltage through an adapter. Makers say these lower the risk of shock. Either way, choose a certified blanket.
• Durability: With proper care, an electric blanket can last several years. Replace it if it’s damaged or about 10 years old.^[1]
