There are several kinds of mattress toppers on the market today. Some add softness, while others add a little more support. In this article, we look at mattress toppers that may make side sleeping more comfortable if your shoulder is sore. A topper can’t treat shoulder pain, but it can change how a firm mattress feels under your shoulder. We also look at the main topper types and how to choose one.

What is the Need for Mattress Toppers?

A mattress topper is a low-cost way to change how your bed feels. Here’s why people with a sore shoulder often look at one.
  • Pressure on the Shoulder – When you sleep on your side, your shoulder takes much of your weight. A cushioning topper on a firm mattress lets the shoulder sink in a little, which many side sleepers find more comfortable. It won’t heal the cause of the pain.
  • Better Feel – A topper can make a mattress that’s too firm feel softer. Besides, a mattress topper for joint pain is worth a look if your hips or knees are sore too.
  • Extended Mattress Life – A topper takes some of the wear, which may help your mattress last a little longer.
  • Comfort – Many people sleep better on a bed they find comfortable. A topper is a cheaper way to test a softer feel than buying a new mattress.

Types of Mattress Toppers for Shoulder Comfort

There are several kinds of mattress toppers. Some of the most common types for side sleepers are below.
  • Memory Foam – Memory foam toppers contour to your body and spread out pressure. They come in many thicknesses and densities.
  • Latex – Latex toppers feel more springy than memory foam and sleep a little cooler for many people. They are often more expensive.
  • Wool – Wool toppers add a thin layer of cushioning and help manage temperature, but they don’t add much pressure relief.
  • Fiberfill and Hybrid – Fiberfill (pillow-top) pads and foam-and-fiber combinations are soft and often machine washable, and they tend to cost less.

How to Pick a Mattress Topper for Shoulder Pain

Consider the following points when choosing a mattress topper.
  • Spine Alignment – Your spine should stay fairly straight when you lie on your side. A topper that’s too thin may not let the shoulder sink in; one that’s too soft may let your hips sag.
  • Firmness – Medium-firm surfaces are often the most comfortable for many people, according to mattress research.[1] Side sleepers with a sore shoulder often prefer a bit softer, so choose what feels right for you.
  • Motion Isolation – Foam toppers absorb movement, so you may be disturbed less when a partner moves.
  • Durability – Higher-density foams usually last longer. Check the warranty and the foam density listed by the maker.
  • Certifications – CertiPUR-US certified foam is tested for certain chemicals and emissions.[2]

When to see a doctor about shoulder pain
  • Common causes of shoulder pain include tendinitis, bursitis, rotator cuff tears, instability, arthritis and fractures. Treatment depends on the cause.[3]
  • Get care right away after an injury with intense pain. See a doctor if pain lasts, keeps you awake, or comes with weakness or numbness.
  • A topper won’t fix a shoulder problem.

What the Research Says

  • A review of 39 studies found that medium-firm mattresses tend to give the best comfort and spinal alignment; most studies looked at back pain, not shoulder pain.[1]
  • We found no good studies showing that a mattress topper treats shoulder conditions.
  • Choose a topper for the feel and thickness you want, not as a treatment.

How we chose these toppers

We did not test these products ourselves. We compared them using the research steps on our How We Research page:
  • Type, thickness and certifications: taken from the maker’s listing.
  • Recall check: we searched the CPSC recall database for each brand.[4]
  • Availability: each product was listed as in stock on Amazon when we last checked (October 2026).
We do not use scores or star ratings, and we do not show prices because they change often. Pain relief claims on product listings are the maker’s, not ours.

2
  • Best for: a responsive foam that doesn’t sink too much.
  • It is a 2-inch open-cell adaptive foam topper with a knit cover. The topper is spot clean only, and the listing doesn’t give a firmness rating.
