Safe sleep for babies (under 1 year)
- Place your baby on their back for every sleep, naps included.[1][3]
- Use a firm, flat, level sleep surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard that meets CPSC safety standards.[5] A firm mattress keeps its shape and does not indent under your baby’s head.[1][3][5]
- Cover the mattress with a fitted sheet only.[1][5]
- Keep bumpers, pillows, blankets, quilts, toppers, and soft toys out of the crib. Use a wearable blanket for warmth.[1][2][3]
- Do not use inclined sleepers or wedges. Surfaces inclined more than 10 degrees are not safe for sleep.[1][5]
- Do not use weighted blankets, sleepers, or swaddles.[2][5]
- Check the fit: if you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib side, the mattress is too small.[9][10]
- Share a room, not a bed, ideally for at least the first 6 months.[2][4]
- Avoid overheating: dress your baby in no more than one layer more than you wear, and keep the head uncovered.[2][3]
- No product, including any mattress, has been shown to prevent SIDS.[2][3]
The Risks Associated With Buying A Crib Mattress
Purchasing a crib mattress is not as simple as going into a store and choosing the cheapest one you find first. The main safety concern is sleep-related infant death, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and accidental suffocation. A soft sleep surface raises the risk of both.[1][3] Here is what to consider when choosing the right crib mattress:- Firmness – babies need a firm, flat mattress because soft surfaces raise the risk of suffocation. A firm surface keeps its shape and does not indent under the baby’s head.[1][3] Memory foam and pillow-top mattresses are not safe for babies to sleep on.[3]
- Chemicals and Certifications – there is no good evidence that chemicals in crib mattresses cause SIDS. Known risk factors include stomach or side sleeping, soft bedding, bed-sharing, overheating, and smoke exposure.[2][3] Parents who want lower chemical emissions or certified foam can look for labels such as GREENGUARD Gold or CertiPUR-US, explained below.[11][12]
- Organic Materials – an organic crib mattress suits parents who prefer certified organic materials. Organic certification covers how the fibers are grown and processed; it is not an allergy claim.[13] Talk to your pediatrician if your baby has a skin reaction.
Standard Crib Mattress Types and Specifications
Did you know that crib mattresses are regulated in the US by the Federal Government? Crib mattresses sold in the US must meet the federal crib mattress standard, 16 CFR 1241, which includes a firmness test.[6][7] A full-size crib mattress must measure at least 27 1/4 inches wide and 51 5/8 inches long.[6][8] Full-size crib mattresses are generally no more than 6 inches thick.[20] A full-size crib measures 28 ± 5/8 inches by 52 3/8 ± 5/8 inches inside.[7] Before you buy a crib mattress
- It must meet the federal crib mattress standard, 16 CFR 1241, which includes a firmness test.[6][7]
- A full-size crib mattress must be at least 27 1/4 inches wide and 51 5/8 inches long.[6][8] Full-size crib mattresses are generally no more than 6 inches thick.[20]
- Check the fit in your crib: no more than two fingers’ width between the mattress and the crib side.[9][10]

- Check for recalls at cpsc.gov/Recalls and register the mattress with the manufacturer.[2][5]
The two-finger test: if more than two fingers fit between the mattress and the crib side, the mattress is too small.[9][10]
Seen from above, the mattress should fill the crib with no gaps. Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only.[1][9][10]
- Innerspring Crib Mattresses – these mattresses have a core of steel coils. The federal standard includes a test for coil springs, and innerspring and foam crib mattresses must pass the same firmness test.[7]
- Foam Crib Mattresses – choose a foam crib mattress that is firm, meets 16 CFR 1241 and has the certifications you want.[6] Firmness lowers the risk of suffocation but does not remove it.[1][6]
Features of a Good Crib Mattress
Here is a list of useful crib mattress features available today:- Waterproof – a waterproof crib mattress is a great feature to have because they are much easier to clean if the child makes any mess.
- Breathable – some crib mattresses have breathable covers. No mattress has been shown to lower SIDS risk.[2][3] To avoid overheating, dress your baby in no more than one layer more than an adult would wear.[2]
- Cotton Layers – cotton is soft, breathable and easy to clean. Some crib mattresses use cotton padding layers or cotton covers; the mattress must still be firm.
- Antimicrobial – antimicrobial treatments on a mattress protect the mattress itself. Under EPA rules, they are not a claim to protect your baby from germs.[15]
- Temperature – overheating raises SIDS risk. It usually comes from too many layers or too much bedding, so dress your baby for the room and keep the head uncovered.[3] Adult mattresses, including memory foam mattresses, are not safe for babies to sleep on.[3]
What the labels mean
- GREENGUARD Gold (UL Solutions): the product meets strict limits for chemical emissions (VOCs) into indoor air.[11] It is an emissions certification, not a general safety rating.[11]
- CertiPUR-US: the foam is made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, CPSC-regulated phthalates, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, has low VOC emissions, and is screened for harmful flame retardants.[12] It covers the foam inside the product, not the whole mattress.[12]
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): textiles made with certified organic fibres and processed under GOTS environmental and social criteria.[13]
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: the textile was tested for a list of harmful substances.[14] Product Class 1 covers items for babies and children up to 3 years.[14]

We compared them using the research steps on our How We Research page:- Federal size and firmness rules: every crib mattress sold in the US must meet the federal crib mattress standard, which includes a firmness test, and a full-size crib mattress must be at least 27 1/4 by 51 5/8 inches. We left out products whose listed size did not fit.[6][8]
- A firm, flat infant surface: no memory foam, pillow-top or incline on the side your baby sleeps on.[1][2]
- Certifications checked where possible: we look up certifications in the certifier’s own database. When we confirmed one, we give the certificate number; when we could not, we write “the manufacturer says”.[11]

- Availability: each mattress was listed as in stock and new on Amazon when we last checked (October 2026).

- Trade-off: the core is synthetic polyester fiber, and the toddler side adds only a thin comfort layer.
