Organic crib mattresses are made from materials such as certified organic cotton, wool or natural latex, and many parents prefer them. What matters most for your baby’s safety, though, is the same for every crib mattress: it must be firm, flat and fit the crib snugly. You can read further to find out what organic does and doesn’t mean on a crib mattress, organic crib mattress buying considerations, and a brief discussion of their key features.

- Place your baby on their back for every sleep, naps included.[1][3]
- Use a firm, flat, level sleep surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard that meets CPSC safety standards.[5] A firm mattress keeps its shape and does not indent under your baby’s head.[1][3][5]
- Cover the mattress with a fitted sheet only.[1][5]
- Keep bumpers, pillows, blankets, quilts, toppers, and soft toys out of the crib. Use a wearable blanket for warmth.[1][2][3]
- Check the fit: if you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib side, the mattress is too small.[9][10]
- Share a room, not a bed, ideally for at least the first 6 months.[2][4]
- Avoid overheating: dress your baby in no more than one layer more than you wear, and keep the head uncovered.[2][3]
- No product, including any organic mattress, has been shown to prevent SIDS.[2][3]
Why Parents Choose Organic Crib Mattresses
Many conventional crib mattresses use polyurethane foam, polyester fiber or steel coils, often with a vinyl or polyethylene waterproof cover. Organic crib mattresses use materials such as certified organic cotton, wool or natural latex, usually around a coil or plant-fiber core. Parents often choose them because they prefer natural, certified materials, and that is a reasonable preference, but it is not a safety requirement.- SIDS and safety – there is no good evidence that non-organic mattresses, or chemicals in crib mattresses, cause SIDS. The risk factors that matter are stomach or side sleeping, soft surfaces and loose bedding, bed-sharing, overheating and smoke exposure.[2][3] The most important feature of any crib mattress, organic or not, is that it is firm, flat and fits the crib snugly.[1][6]
- What the organic label covers – organic certification (such as GOTS) covers how the fibers are grown and processed.[13] It is not a safety rating or an allergy claim.[13]
- Lower emissions – parents who want lower chemical emissions from any mattress can look for GREENGUARD Gold, and for foam, CertiPUR-US.[11][12]
- “Natural” or soy foam is not organic – soy-based foam is still polyurethane foam with part of the oil replaced by plant oil. It can be a good, firm choice, but it is not an organic material.
Organic Crib Mattress Buying Considerations
These crib mattress buying considerations are important for new parents to know about. Crib mattresses sold in the US must meet the federal crib mattress standard, 16 CFR 1241, which includes a firmness test.[6][7]- It must meet the federal crib mattress standard, 16 CFR 1241, which includes a firmness test.[6][7]
- A full-size crib mattress must be at least 27 1/4 inches wide and 51 5/8 inches long.[6][8] Full-size crib mattresses are generally no more than 6 inches thick.[15]
- Check the fit in your crib: no more than two fingers’ width between the mattress and the crib side.[9][10]
- On a dual-sided mattress, use the firm infant side for babies under 12 months.[1]
- Check for recalls at cpsc.gov/Recalls and register the mattress with the manufacturer.[2][5]

The two-finger test: if more than two fingers fit between the mattress and the crib side, the mattress is too small.[9][10]

Seen from above, the mattress should fill the crib with no gaps. Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only.[1][9][10]
- Infant or Toddler? – babies under 12 months need a firm, flat surface that does not indent under their head; soft surfaces raise the risk of suffocation.[1][3] Many crib mattresses are dual-sided, with a firm infant side and a softer toddler side.
- Foam Crib Mattresses – choose a foam crib mattress that is firm and meets 16 CFR 1241.[6] The side your baby sleeps on must be firm and flat and must pass the federal firmness test.[1][6] If you want certified foam, look for CertiPUR-US.[12]
- Seamless or Lock Stitched – babies can be rough on crib mattresses. Lock-stitched or bound seams sit on the sides of the mattress, out of the baby’s reach, and a firm edge helps the mattress keep its shape and fit snugly in the crib.
Features of a Good Crib Mattress
Here is a list of useful features for crib mattresses:- Dual-Sided – smart planning: one firm side for infants and a softer side for toddlers. Use the firm side for babies under 12 months.[1]
- Waterproof – babies are messy, so a waterproof surface is a useful feature. A removable waterproof cover is the easiest to keep clean, and you can wipe down most waterproof crib mattresses with a damp cloth. Never add a soft topper or pad on top.
- Dust Mites – a tightly woven or waterproof cover limits dust mites inside the mattress, but mite-proof covers on their own have shown little benefit for allergy symptoms.[16] Talk to your pediatrician if your child has allergies.
- Breathable – some crib mattresses have breathable covers or cores. No mattress has been shown to lower SIDS risk.[2][3] To avoid overheating, dress your baby in no more than one layer more than an adult would wear.[2]
- Talalay Process – Talalay latex is made by a different molding process from Dunlop latex. Neither process makes latex organic; look for a GOLS or similar certificate if you want organic latex.[21]
- GREENGUARD Gold (UL Solutions): the product meets strict limits for chemical emissions (VOCs) into indoor air.[11] It is an emissions certification, not a general safety rating.[11]
- CertiPUR-US: the foam is made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, CPSC-regulated phthalates, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, has low VOC emissions, and is screened for harmful flame retardants.[12] It covers the foam inside the product, not the whole mattress.[12]
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): textiles made with certified organic fibres and processed under GOTS environmental and social criteria.[13]
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: the textile was tested for a list of harmful substances.[14] Product Class 1 covers items for babies and children up to 3 years.[14]
Our Organic Crib Mattress Picks
How we chose these crib mattresses
We did not test these mattresses ourselves. We compared them using the research steps on our How We Research page:- Federal size and firmness rules: every crib mattress sold in the US must meet the federal crib mattress standard, which includes a firmness test, and a full-size crib mattress must be at least 27 1/4 by 51 5/8 inches.[6][8]
- A firm, flat infant surface: the side your baby sleeps on must be firm and flat, with no incline, as the AAP and 16 CFR 1241 require.[6][1][2]
- Certifications checked where possible: we look up certifications in the certifier’s own database. When we confirmed one, we give the certificate number; when we could not, we write “the manufacturer says”.[11]
- Recall check: we searched the CPSC recall database for each brand and model.[9]
- Organic or plant-based materials: we say which materials are certified organic and which are plant-based but not organic.

- Trade-off: at 19 lb, it is heavier than the fiber and foam mattresses on this list.
3

4
- Best for: parents who want a light, plant-based foam mattress with a wipe-clean cover.

- Trade-off: the cover is vinyl-type waterproof material rather than organic cotton.
5

- According to the manufacturer, it combines organic cotton, organic sheep’s wool and organic latex foam over innersprings, with a waterproof, easy-to-clean surface.
- The manufacturer says the mattress is fully GOTS certified.[13]
- Both sides have the same firmness, so it is not a 2-stage mattress.
- The manufacturer says all of its mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold certified; we could not find this model in the UL database.[23]
- It contains latex and wool, so skip it if your child is allergic to either.
- Trade-off: the Amazon listing gives the height as 4 inches, while the manufacturer lists 5.25 inches; either way, check that your crib sheet fits snugly.
