If your child is under 1 year
  • Place your baby on their back for every sleep, on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard that meets CPSC safety standards.[1][2]
  • On a dual-sided mattress, use the firm infant side for babies under 12 months. The softer toddler side is for older children.[1]
  • Cover the mattress with a fitted sheet only, and keep pillows, blankets, bumpers and soft toys out of the crib.[1][3]
  • No product, including any mattress, has been shown to prevent SIDS.[3][4]

The Right Kind of Support for Toddlers

Babies need a firm, flat mattress. The main reason is safety: a firm surface lowers the risk of suffocation.[1] Toddler beds are built around a standard full-size crib mattress, so the mattresses below fit both cribs and toddler beds.[5] Every crib mattress sold in the US must meet the federal crib mattress standard, 16 CFR 1241, which includes a firmness test.[6][7] An infant needs the firm side of a crib mattress, whereas a toddler can use a little more cushioning. Many dual-sided mattresses have a firm infant side and a slightly softer toddler side, so one mattress lasts from the crib to the toddler bed. A full-size crib mattress must be at least 27 1/4 inches wide and 51 5/8 inches long, and is generally no more than 6 inches thick.[6][8][9] If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the frame, the mattress is too small.[10][11]
Side view of the two-finger test: two fingers fit in the gap between the crib mattress edge and the crib side. If more than two fingers fit, the mattress is too small.

The two-finger test: if more than two fingers fit between the mattress and the crib side, the mattress is too small.[10][11]

Top view of two cribs: a mattress that fills the crib with no gaps (snug fit) and a smaller mattress leaving a gap along two sides (gap too big). Also check: snug on all four sides, firm and flat, fitted sheet only.

Seen from above, the mattress should fill the crib with no gaps. Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only.[1][10][11]

There are a few common types of crib mattresses that you can get for your toddler:
  • Foam Crib Mattress – A foam mattress is light, which makes sheet changes easier, and foam is usually cheaper to buy. Many have a waterproof cover. Foam is also used in many twin mattresses for kids.
  • Innerspring Crib Mattress – an innerspring crib mattress has coils inside, like an adult mattress, with a layer of cotton, wool, fiber or foam on top. It is usually heavier than foam.
  • Fiber Crib Mattress – some mattresses use a fiber or polymer core instead of foam or coils. All types must pass the same federal firmness test.[7]
Once your child is at least 2 and can get in and out of bed alone, see our toddler bed rails guide.

Risks Associated with Purchasing a Toddler Mattress

There are two main risks to know about when you buy a mattress for your baby or toddler. If you are a parent, you need to know these safe-sleep facts.
  1. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) – SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby under 1. The cause is not known, and no mattress or other product has been shown to prevent it.[3][4] What lowers the risk is a safe sleep setup: always place your baby on their back, on a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only.[1]
  2. Suffocation – never put a baby on a memory foam topper or any soft surface that lets them sink in. Soft surfaces and soft bedding can block a baby’s breathing. A firm, flat mattress that fits the crib with no gaps helps prevent suffocation and entrapment.[1][10]

Toddler Mattress Qualities to Look For

Here are some useful toddler mattress features.
  • Organic and Certified Materials – organic cotton or wool covers are popular, and labels such as GREENGUARD Gold, CertiPUR-US and GOTS tell you what was tested.[12][13][14] These are not general safety ratings.[12][13][14] If your child has allergies, ask your pediatrician.
  • Waterproof – A waterproof crib mattress is very useful, especially if your little one is quite the mess maker! Many can be wiped down with a damp cloth.
  • Removable Cover – A removable, washable cover makes cleaning much easier and keeps the mattress in good condition. Follow the maker’s care label.
What the labels mean
  • GREENGUARD Gold (UL Solutions): the product meets strict limits for chemical emissions (VOCs) into indoor air.[12]
  • CertiPUR-US: the foam is made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, CPSC-regulated phthalates, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, and has low VOC emissions.[13] It covers the foam, not the whole mattress.[13]
  • GOTS: textiles made with certified organic fibres and processed under GOTS criteria.[14]
  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: the textile was tested for a list of harmful substances.[15]

Our Toddler Mattress Picks

How we chose these toddler mattresses

We did not test these mattresses ourselves. We compared them using the research steps on our How We Research page:
  • Federal size and firmness rules: every mattress here is a full-size crib mattress that also fits standard toddler beds.[6][8]
  • Certifications checked where possible: when we confirmed a certification in the certifier’s database, we give the certificate number; otherwise we write “the manufacturer says”.[12]
  • Recall check: we searched the CPSC recall database for each brand and model.[10]
  • Availability: each mattress was listed as in stock on Amazon when we last checked (October 2026).
We do not use scores or star ratings, and we do not show prices because they change often.
1
  • Best for: parents who want a lightweight, dual-sided fiber-core mattress on a budget.
  • This mattress is sold by Delta Children under the Serta brand name.
  • According to the manufacturer, it has a firm side for infants and a toddler side with an extra comfort layer.
  • It is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions (UL certificate 301526-420).[16][12]
  • The manufacturer says the fiber core is made from recycled plastic bottles and lists the size as 52 x 27.5 x 5.5 inches, for standard full-size cribs and toddler beds.
  • Trade-off: the core is synthetic polyester fiber, and the toddler side adds only a thin comfort layer.

2
  • Best for: parents who want a light, plant-based foam mattress with a wipe-clean cover.
  • According to the manufacturer, it has a firmer infant side and a toddler side with a soy-enhanced foam topper.
  • The soy-enhanced foam is still polyurethane foam; this mattress is not organic.
  • The manufacturer says the foam is CertiPUR-US certified.[13]
  • It is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions (UL certificate 20929-420, model EM710).[17][12]
  • The manufacturer lists the size as 51.63 x 27.25 x 5 inches, for standard full-size cribs and toddler beds.
  • Trade-off: the cover is vinyl-type waterproof material rather than organic cotton.

3
  • Best for: parents who prefer a traditional coil mattress with an extra-firm infant side.
  • According to the manufacturer, it has 204 steel coils, a perimeter border wire and steel support bars.
  • The manufacturer says the infant side is extra firm and the toddler side is softer.
  • It is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions (UL certificate 21204-420).[18][12]
  • The listing describes a medical-grade waterproof cover that wipes clean.[19]
  • Trade-off: the vinyl cover can feel crinkly, and coil mattresses are heavier than fiber-core ones.

4
  • Best for: parents who want a mattress they can wash down to the core.
  • The manufacturer says the core is about 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, with no foam, latex or springs.
  • According to the manufacturer, the cover is machine-washable and the core can be rinsed in a shower or tub.
  • It is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions (UL certificate 67431-420).[20][12]
  • A breathable core can feel cooler, but no mattress has been shown to lower SIDS risk; place your baby on their back on a firm, flat surface with only a fitted sheet.[3][4]
  • Trade-off: it costs more than most fiber-core and foam mattresses, and the standard cover is not waterproof.

5
  • Best for: parents who want natural materials instead of polyurethane foam.
  • According to the manufacturer, it has a cotton cover, wool batting, coconut fiber bonded with latex, and individually wrapped coils.
  • The manufacturer says it has a firm side for infants and a softer side for toddlers.
  • It is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions (UL certificate 341781-420).[21][12]
  • The manufacturer lists the size as 52 x 28.25 x 5.5 inches, for standard full-size cribs.
  • It does not have a waterproof surface; the cover is organic cotton, and the maker sells a waterproof protector separately.[24]
  • Trade-off: it contains wool and natural latex, which may matter for families with those allergies.

6
  • Best for: parents who want a simple foam mattress with a removable, machine-washable cover.
  • The Graco Premium Foam mattress features a firm foam core. It is single-sided, firm throughout, so it is not a 2-stage mattress.[25]
  • According to the manufacturer, it has a waterproof surface and comes with a removable, machine-washable cover.
  • The manufacturer says it is GREENGUARD Gold certified and that the foam core is CertiPUR-US certified.[13][12]
  • It is designed to fit standard full-size cribs and toddler beds.
  • Trade-off: its certifications are as listed by the manufacturer; we could not find this model in UL’s certification database.[12]

7
  • Best for: parents who want a light, firm fiber-core mattress that makes sheet changes easier.
  • It is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions (UL certificate 79557-420).[22][12]
  • It has a firm polyester fiber core.
  • It is sized for standard full-size cribs and toddler beds.
  • It has a waterproof vinyl cover that is durable and easy to clean.
  • Trade-off: the vinyl cover can feel crinkly, and Delta sells several similar Twinkle Stars versions, so check the exact model before you buy.

8

  • The manufacturer lists the size as 52 x 28 x up to 6 inches, for standard full-size cribs and toddler beds.
  • Trade-off: it ships compressed in a box and needs up to 48 hours to expand fully before use.
